Using Autodesk's converter I opened up the same *.fbx file and in the right-hand pane I selected 'Embed Media' and then saved the file as a binary *.fbx file. I then opened up the *.fbx file in Autodesk's FBX viewer\converter app to see the results of my handiwork and as expected the top face of the cube was textured. I saved the mesh out as an *.fbx 2013 file into the same folder as the texture is stored in. The native format, per the fbx SDK is binary and it looks like ASCII is just another option they provide, but don't really elaborate in the manual : The fbx format was created by Autodesk and usually the dates represent the versions they currently provide and are usually released yearly, often with various bug fixes or improvements.
